Satellite observations of the quasi 5-day wave in noctilucent clouds and mesopause temperatures

چکیده
[1] We report on simultaneous measurements of the westward propagating quasi 5-day wave in the occurrence rate of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) and the temperature field at NLC altitude during the 2005 NLC season in the northern hemisphere. NLCs are detected using SCIAMACHY/ Envisat limb scattering measurements, and the temperature profiles are measured with MLS/Aura. Quasi 5-day wave signatures are clearly identified in both physical and wavelet space. We find good general agreement in the quasi 5-day wave activity of NLC occurrence rates and the mesopause temperature field, indicating that planetary wave signatures in the temperature field are the main driver of corresponding signatures in NLCs. Comparison of long-term Moscow and Danish NLC observations: statistical results
Noctilucent clouds (NLC) are the highest clouds in the Earth’s atmosphere, observed close to the mesopause at 80–90 km altitudes. Systematic NLC observations conducted in Moscow for the period of 1962–2005 and in Denmark for 1983–2005 are compared and statistical results both for seasonally summarized NLC parameters and for individual NLC appearances are described. Careful attention is paid to ...
متن کاملOn the seasonal onset of polar mesospheric clouds and the breakdown of the stratospheric polar vortex in the Southern Hemisphere
[1] Southern Hemisphere (SH) polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs), also known as noctilucent clouds, have been observed to be more variable and, in general, dimmer than their Northern Hemisphere (NH) counterparts. The precise cause of these hemispheric differences is not well understood. This paper focuses on one aspect of the hemispheric differences: the timing of the PMC season onset. Observations...
متن کاملOn Dynamics and Transport Near the Polar Mesopause in Summer
Some basic aspects of dynamics and transport in polar regions within one or two scale heights of the summer mesopause are examined, and the implications for local one-dimensional photochemical modeling of those regions discussed. Included is a simple thought experiment on gravity wave breaking that throws further light on the so-called "turbulent Prandtl number" question, and related questions....
متن کاملCoupling in the middle atmosphere related to the 2013 major sudden stratospheric warming
The previously reported observation of anomalous eastward gravity wave forcing at mesopause heights around the onset of the January 2013 major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) over Trondheim, Norway (63 N, 10 E), is placed in a global perspective using Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) temperature observations from the Aura satellite. It is shown that this anomalous forcing results in a clear cool...
متن کاملDiurnal variations of midlatitude NLC parameters observed by daylightcapable lidar and their relation to ambient parameters
[1] Noctilucent Clouds (NLCs) are an important phenomenon of the summer mesopause region. While relatively common in high latitudes, NLCs are sparse ( 10% occurrence rate) below 60 latitude. We present the first study of diurnal variations of midlatitude NLCs based on lidar observations with full diurnal coverage at Kühlungsborn since 2010 independent from solar elevation. Overall, 100 h of NLC...
